Billund Sculpture Park was established in 1990. It stretches from Hotel Propellen to Billund Civic Centre. And quite in keeping with the basic idea of contrasts, the path through the sculpture park links the town's tourist area to the town centre.
So the title of the first work is really quite appropriate: "Entrance", a large granite sculpture by Niels Peter Bruun Nielsen.
The sculpture park is by no means static. For one thing, new works are continually added whenever funds allow. For another, temporary exhibitions are also organised. Like in 1995 when no fewer than 17 students attending the Royal Danish Academy of Art exhibited their works.
Art serves many purposes. It can quite simply be beautiful and attractive, a delight to the eye. But by its very nature, art is also provocative. It must provoke a response in the beholder. That, however, is not always popular with everyone. Perhaps the artist provokes distaste. Or perhaps personal sensibilities are offended. Before the park was established, a sculpture called "Blue Stone" by Alfio Bonanno stood there. However, it became so damaged by vandalism that it eventually had to be destroyed.
Hopefully, the artist approved. Rather a violent reaction than none at all. Today, the Sculpture Park in Billund is a major cultural initiative, providing visitors with endless inspiration, provocation and stimulation in their everyday lives.
