A trip in the country

The weather in Denmark is never very predictable. But regardless of weather, there are many beautiful spots in Billund where you can enjoy a picnic or an afternoon nap on a rug..

There are many myths about life on the heath in the old days. A lot of them are nonsense, of course, but it is undoubtedly true that this flat, wind-swept area was almost treeless for centuries.
Now however, there are no fewer than 14 plantations in Billund, varying in size from 30 hectares (about 75 acres) to 820 hectares (just over 2000 acres).
Most of the plantations were established between 1890 and 1900. Much of the work was paid for by rich Copenhagen-based merchants, who felt they had a patriotic duty to forest the heath. In some places the soil was almost nothing but sand. Today, the plantations are large green islands, spread throughout the municipality.
Grene Sande, is, as the name implies, an area of sandy moorland amidst the fertile soils of Jutland. It may not sound like much fun, but a walk in the area is a perfect way to get plenty of fresh air and exercise. So go and enjoy the wonderful scenery in one of the few inland dunes in Denmark. The area also boasts a prolific birdlife, lots of wild berries and the river Grene.

A strange natural phenomenon, known as the “seven-year lakes”, occurs in Frederikshåb Plantage. Occasionally, there are large lakes. At other times the water is gone and you can walk on the dry lake beds. The plantation also contains extensive inland dunes and a mysterious area with about 175 stone mounds, all of which are about 5000 years old.

Sønder Omme Plantage is the largest plantation in the area. Covering 821 hectares (2020 acres), the plantation contains more than 15 different tree species.

In 1997, a Russian artist was invited to Egtved to decorate an old elm tree. The Fairy Tale Tree resulted, on which 34 figures from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales are found. An interesting – and quite exceptional – way of experiencing nature.

Randbøl Hede, south-west of Randbøl is one of the last-remaining moor landscapes in Denmark. Covering 750 hectares (1850 acres), it is also the country's largest inland heath.
