Stenderup-Krogager

Stenderup-Krogager

In the most south-westerly corner of Billund Municipality lies the village of Stenderup-Krogager. The reason why it has a double-barrelled name can be discussed at length. But we'll leave that aside for now. Instead, visitors to the area should ask one of the locals. And then ask someone else. You'll doubtless get a completely different answer!
But whatever you are told, it is an undisputed fact that the parish has been called Stenderup ever since the 13th century. Unfortunately though, Stenderup is an extremely popular name and the Danish State Railways refused to allow the station to be called Stenderup when the railway was built. There were already ten other Stenderups in Denmark! So the double-barrelled name is really very practical.
It is also very appropriate, considering the village's heritage: a mix of traditional cooperative agriculture and railway-based development. Town and country meet – within the village itself. But such duality goes even deeper. There are two schools in the village: Stenderup School, a state-run primary and lower secondary school, and Hestkær Friskole, a private school based on Grundtvigian principles. And even the church is a bit of a double, being a satellite of Ansager Church. It was built in 1909 by the way, under the auspices of Lønborg-Jensen, a renowned architect with – naturally – a double-barrelled name!
The village presently boasts several small companies and shops. Groceries and other household goods are available from Dagli' Brugsen. There is a hairdresser, auto repair shops, fish farm and even a discotheque. There are numerous clubs and associations, and a care centre for older citizens. In fact, you could quite easily lead a long and happy life without ever having to leave Stenderup-Krogager. So come and visit the village with a double-barrelled name and a double-barrelled heritage, but with a single unified identity.
